Medical School Lands $1M Research Grant

The University of Massachusetts Medical School has been awarded a $1-million grant that will support a DNA-focused research project aimed at treating patients with Down syndrome.

The project at the Worcester school was one of three that received grants from The John Merck Fund, a Boston-based foundation that plans to award up to $100 million in grants through 2022. The grants are aimed to support scientists in the development of treatments and the improvement of outcomes for people with developmental disabilities, particularly Down and Fragile X syndromes.

The project, being led by Jeanne B. Lawrence, a professor of cell and developmental biology and pediatrics, focuses on the extra chromosome – called Chromosome 21 - common in people with Down syndrome.
