Celebrating National Down Syndrome Awareness Month
STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFORMATION!
Every October since 1996, the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress has been hosting its Buddy Walk & Family Festival to celebrate the Down syndrome community and promote acceptance and inclusion. Held annually during National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, our signature walk continues to be the MDSC's largest public awareness and fundraising event.
Thousands of people pledge their support and join together as they walk around beautiful Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield. The day includes pre-walk activities, opening ceremony, a three-mile walk, family festival, and post-walk entertainment. Every walker is encouraged to raise a minimum of $150 before the day of the walk.
This year’s theme, “The World Is Ours,” represents the culture of the disability world today. “The World Is Ours” means that people with Down syndrome are taking ownership over all aspects of their lives - education, health care, employment, public policy, housing, and recreation. It has special meaning this year as three major pieces of legislature effecting people with Down syndrome and other disabilities were recently approved by the State. These include the National Background Check Bill, the Real Lives Bill, and the Able Act. MDSC has been championing for these bills for years, and it was a major victory to see them signed this past year. Opportunities for people of all abilities continue to expand in this progressive time period, providing hope and inspiration to individuals with Down syndrome and their families and friends. Communities and schools continue to become more inclusive, workplaces are making stronger efforts to hire people with different ranges of abilities, and people with disabilities are seeking out more ways to leave their mark on the world.
As the state's leading provider of information, networking opportunities, and advocacy for and about Down syndrome, your support will allow the MDSC to continue supporting, enhancing and expanding opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome.
