If you are preparing to deliver a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis of Down syndrome, you may access best practices based on research by Brian S. Skotko, MD, MPP for suggestions on how to best deliver the diagnosis and provide support for these families.

The MDSC Parent’s First Call Program offers your new and expectant families accurate, up-to-date information and an opportunity to speak with a trained parent mentor. We encourage you to refer new and expectant families to this program.

If you are caring for an individual with Down syndrome, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently published updated health care guidelines. The guidelines provide information about health concerns for individuals with Down syndrome from birth through adulthood. It is also helpful to refer patients to a local Down Syndrome Clinic for specialized care. These Down Syndrome Clinics coordinate closely with the Primary Care Physician.

As a health care professional, if you are interested in additional information about Down syndrome and related topics, you may request a Grand Rounds medical training at your hospital. You may also consider an on-line course for professional credit.
