Webinar! Access Granted: Increasing Independence and Accessibility for Individuals with Down syndrome

Tuesday, January 9th | 7:00pm - 8:30pm ET
Zoom

This presentation will use the developmental progression of skills as an outline for supporting children and young adults with Down syndrome with developing independence with their activities of daily living. We will discuss sensory processing as the foundation for all skill development, building on this to learn about how gross and fine motor skills are established, to be followed by the more complex self-care and life skills. Strategies for supporting accessibility and function within each of these stages will be considered, with the goal of providing supporters and caregivers with practical tools to support the needs of their loved ones and supported individuals with Down syndrome.

Presented by: Arianna Coles, M.OT, Registered Occupational Therapist

Arianna is a graduate of the Master of Occupational Therapy program at the University of British Columbia. Prior to this, Arianna worked as a Community Living Counselor for 6 years, where she discovered her passion for working with individuals with varying abilities and diagnoses. This inspired her to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy. Arianna values collaborating with those she works with in order to discover what is meaningful to them and working to support her clients to achieve their goals in a fun and engaging way. She has worked at the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation for almost 4 years, and takes a special interest in such areas as executive functioning, mental wellness, and aging in Down syndrome.
